SENSES IN CONCERT
People and animals have five senses. They help them to observe and learn about the world. They gather information and send it to the brain. These five senses are:

People can recognize colors, shapes, and sizes with their eyes. Ears are used for hearing. Sounds are created and heard by living things. Things are sensed or touched by hands. We can feel when something is fluffy, sturdy, soft, or hard. If we want to smell things, we use our noses.

The tongue tells us how things taste. With its help, we can distinguish between bitter, sweet, or sour flavors.

Sour – to have an unpleasant taste, like a lemon.

SURVIVING THE DESERT
• Imagine that you are lost in the desert and discuss the challenges you might face, such as extreme heat, lack of landmarks, and limited resources.
• Set up five stations: sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste.
• Prepare desert-themed materials for each station.

Discussion Questions:
1. Which station had the most impact on understanding the challenges of the desert?
2. How did the lack of landmarks affect perception of direction and navigation?
3. Did the sensory stations help appreciate the importance of water and food in the desert?
4. How would the sensation of hot sand and rocks under your feet affect your physical well-being in the desert? How would you cope with it?

FOLLOW YOUR NOSE
Our sense of smell is made possible by tiny hairs called cilia in our noses. These hairs connect to sensors that send small signals to our brain through the olfactory nerve. When certain molecules float in the air and enter our noses, we can smell them. We sniff to bring more of these molecules to the top of our nose, where they attach to special sensors and allow us to detect different smells.
Smelling has several benefits. It enhances the taste of our food, allowing us to experience a wide range of flavors.
Additionally, our sense of smell acts as a warning system, alerting us to things like spoiled food or the presence of smoke from a fire.

1. Have you ever smelled something that made you feel like you wanted to eat it right away?
What was it, and how did it make you feel?

3. What are some of your favorite smells, and why do you like them? Do different smells evoke different emotions or memories for you?

THE DARK CRAWLERS

Cockroaches are winged insects that are often considered the most hated creatures on Earth. It is a well-known fact that nobody loves them, except other roaches. They are smelly, dirty, and ugly. They live in buildings, cellars, and sewers because they prefer dark and wet areas. Roaches are not picky eaters; they are omnivorous and consume both plants and meat.

They eat various items such as wallpaper, clothing, beer, hair, books, and decaying matter. They also eat rotten plants and dead insects. Cockroaches possess well-developed senses.

They have eyes with multiple parts that assist them in hunting in complete darkness. During the day, roaches often hide, and at night they emerge to forage for food. According to health officials, insects can harbor viruses. Furthermore, scientific research has revealed a link between cockroach allergies and the development of asthma.
