CREATURES OF THE BUZZING
WORLD
Bees are the most interesting denizens of the world. They are native to all parts of the Globe, except for the polar regions, because it is cold there. Honeybees are sociable insects, they like being with 80,000 bees in a colony.
• The queen occupies a key role in the hive. She lays millions of eggs throughout her lifetime.
• The worker bee shoulders much more responsibilities and performs duties than any other bee. He gathers nectar, protects the hive from enemies, takes care of the queen and larvae, and keeps the habitat neat and clean. The worker collects nectar and pollen from different flowers and produces honey, which is stored in a honeycomb (made of wax inside the nest).
Drone is a male bee and its only and main purpose is to mate with a young queen.
He does not work and he is lazy, has no sting. The worker bees kill drones when they are no longer needed; they cause them to become weak by hunger and cause death.
• After the worker bees have built a hive that is made from beeswax, the queen starts laying eggs in the first cell. When some workers adorn the hive, the rest fly out to look for nectar and pollen. They have long tongues, which help them to collect nectar. They use their back legs to carry the pollen from the plants.
• Worker bees feed the queens with royal jelly, which contains vitamins and proteins. After hatching, the young queens eat prepared honey, which makes them strong and they regain their energy.
