MASTERING FIRST AID

First aid – basic medical treatment that people need immediately after being hurt or injured in an accident.

Cool Waters Of Healing
• If you receive a burn, you need to put the burned area under cool water as soon as possible and keep it there for at least 5 to 15 minutes.
• Using ice to treat the burn can worsen the situation. Cover the burn with sterile material to avoid and decrease the risk of infection. It will also help you alleviate pain.
• Don’t put butter, grease, or ointment on the burn. You must not pop blisters to eliminate the risk of infection.

KILLING THE SWELL
• If you sprain your ankle, avoid heat as it can worsen swelling by increasing blood flow.
Instead, apply ice to the injured area to reduce swelling, bruising, and muscle spasms.
Remember not to place an ice pack directly on your skin and limit application to 20 minutes.

THE FAINT’S LULLABY
• If people faint, do not force them to sit up.
Instead, check their breathing and pulse. If they are breathing and have a pulse, leave them on the ground and raise their legs about 12 inches off the floor.
• After they regain consciousness, do not let them get up right away, as they might faint again.

GLASS FOOTFALL
• If you step on glass, avoid pulling out the broken pieces yourself.

BITE BEWARE
Bites from stray animals can transmit rabies, a potentially deadly disease. It can also cause neurological symptoms in humans and animals.
• If you get bitten by a stray animal, clean the bite with soap and water. If the wound is bleeding, apply a pressure bandage and a clean cloth to stem the bleeding. Seek immediate medical attention. The doctor will assess the situation and decide if antibiotics are needed to prevent infection.
• Contacting the local health department is important to capture the animal for rabies testing.
• If the animal cannot be found, you may need a series of rabies shots.

CALM FLOW
How to stop a nosebleed?
• Stay calm.
• Place the victim in a sitting position with his head leaning forward.
• Pinch the soft part of the nose several times.
• Avoid tilting the head backward, as it can lead to coughing or vomiting.
